college has been found dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound at a bird sanctuary, police say.
Jacob Marberger, 19, left his family home in a Philadelphia suburb on Monday with a rifle case, his parents said.
His body was found inside a green Land Rover on Saturday afternoon beside a picnic area at the Hawk Mountain Sanctuary in Kempton, Pennsylvania.
Washington College, Chestertown, where Marberger was a sophomore, declared a lockdown on Monday after he went missing.
The liberal arts school later said it would remain shut until after the Thanksgiving break.
College officials said there had been no direct threat to the campus.
The teen's father, Dr Jon Marberger, told NBC10 his troubles began when his son felt humiliated by a prank fellow students played on him last month.
Someone had placed a bin full of water against his dorm door so that when he went into the room the water spilled everywhere.
Marberger was suspended later that month after drunkenly brandishing an unloaded antique pistol at a campus party.
He was facing possible expulsion and criminal charges over the incident.
Marberger was allowed back on campus only after agreeing to undergo a psychological evaluation.
He was kicked out of his fraternity and his dormitory and resigned his elected position as speaker of the senate.
Marberger had been confronted on Sunday night by members of his student government group, said his father.
The teenager had told police he was being "persecuted" by other students.
Washington College announced Marberger's death with "great sorrow" on Saturday night.
"This is a terrible blow to our community," said the statement, "and the outpouring of compassion and support we have shown each other will help us through this difficult time."
College officials say counsellors will be available to students when classes resume on 30 November.
